I have just been reviewing one of my earlier stories, Roman Bride. This is a fun adventure romance set in Romano Celtic Britain, in the era after the withdrawal of the Roman garrisons. This is the time when the Saxons came in the country and pushed the native Celts into retreat. This era is said to be the age of King Arthur when he fought to try and save Celtic Britain. Arthur wasn’t king. He was, if he existed more likely to have been a soldier who fought a rear-guard action, and was raised to the rank of Emperor by popular acclaim or by his soldiers. Much of Arthur’s story is legend, but there may be a small core of historical truth. So I’ve chosen to imagine that he was a real person, who had a fort in Devon, Camlann and tried to preserve the best of Celtic and Roman ways. And that he had a wife called Gwynhwyvar and a friend and fellow soldier called Lancelot. Arthur and Gwynhwyvar are minor characters in my story. The hero and heroine are the Lord Peredur and Flavia. She is from a Roman family and somewhat stiff and haughty and over refined. He is a soldier who -like Arthur - is ready to embrace the best of British and Roman institutions and culture. Arthur has arranged his marriage to Flavia as marriages were arranged, to form an alliance between one of his men and a family from the old Roman aristocracy, and neither of them is very keen on the match. But Flavia is intelligent and willing to make the best of it. She and Peredur are married and move to Camlann. Flavia begins to grow fond of her husband, but finds it hard at times to fit in with the Celtic ways. And she is also suspicious of the red headed Lady Anghahad, who is one of the women of the court, and who seems to have a past with Peredur.
